The governments “be clear on cancer” campaign has appeared to help improve diagnosis rates of lung cancer. Adverts on television and the radio urged people to have a cough that has lasted for more than 3 weeks to be checked out by their Doctor.
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK. It is said that it accounts for more than a fifth of all lung cancer deaths.
Early detection allows for early treatment of lung cancer which in turn improves survival rates.
Cancer research UK have said that an extra 700 lung cancer cases have been diagnosed due to the governments campaign. Many of the diagnosis allowed for early detection, which meant 300 more patients where able to have prompt surgery allowing for a better quality of life and an increased rate of survival.
Dr Harpul Kumar the charity chief executive has said that, “by acting quickly if you notice a possible symptom you can give yourself the best chance of survival. In many cases it wont be cancer but it is better to be sure and treat it earlier rather than later”.
